Advanced transmission technologies can double the capacity of existing lines and cut congestion costs 25–50%, with most upgrades in place in one to three years. U.S. utilities still rarely use them.
Advanced Transmission Technologies boost grid capacity using enhanced power flow control, high-performance conductors, and storage systems. Though proven to double capacity since the 2000s, these solutions aren’t yet widely used by U.S. utilities.
State regulators can speed ATT adoption by pursuing federal funds, requiring ATT evaluation in planning, creating working groups, studying benefits, and prioritizing innovation while optimizing existing infrastructure.
